I can’t remember seeing any Oppo posts about the sport. Maybe it’s too trendy for us? Prove me wrong? I kinda wanna learn but I have no idea where I’m supposed to get seat time.

I think I would like to know as well. It's something that looks fun, but a lot of us are line drivers.

Search for Project Riceball. Aquila121 is working on an old AE86 drift car with a ramen-noodle budget.

It’s not a sport here, just winter driving conditions.

I did it a lot back before I got new tires that didn’t have a 3-digit date code. Not on purpose of course (most of the tim e)

The issue with line driving, for me, is that I never even touched a go-kart until the creaky old age of 20. To be competitive professionally requires seat time starting from a quarter of that age.
Drifting is a subjective sport. People criticize it for that, but that subjectivity means 22-year-old farts like myself could hypothetically compete and still have fun. Competitive success isn’t necessarily required for commercial success, or even success on a hobby level.

If I had bought a 350 Z or a 240 instead, I’d actually have shown up to some events (and sucked at it) by now.
Dammit ...

I got a taste of it last year when it rained, and my tread depth was getting low.
Unintentional drifting is still drifting, and certainly still an adrenaline rush...

I like the way you think. I myself never touched a kart until 27 so I know how that goes. I’m just short and adorable so everyone thought I was younger.
I thought I might get into amateur rallying at one point but I just work too much probably like everyone else in their 30's.

What region are you in? I’m a fan who similarly wants to learn, but got bogged down by purchasing an absolute money-pit of a car. So instead I’ve gone to a few drift days and spectated or gotten ride-alongs. I do keep coming across groups and venues elsewhere that might be a way to get started—though again, I have yet to get seat time of my own.
I’m seriously considering dropping a serious amount of cash to just go do the Team O'Neil Drift School this year to learn basics.

Yes. But then you’d just be another self-indulgent wiener waiting in line at Starbucks.
But if you had a 1964 GTB/4 quad-cam AE86 with a Honda K-series swap, you would not be a self-indulgent wiener; You’d be a connoisseur.

Not professionally. I just stick to parking lots. It’s e asier on the tires (and wallet) to wait for snow, too .
You’re in CA though, right? I g uess snow might not be an option for you. Besides, snow skills don’t translate directly to dry- pavement drifting anyway when it comes to footwork and breaking traction. You can still get some feel for countersteering though, so if you have access to any wet skidpads in your area, that could help with tire life.

Funny thing is I have a karting school lined up for my kids. They're only 18 months though, so they have a few years.

I’m a SoCal local, so I know there are a few tracks within ~300 miles of me. My car’s “moneypit interval” is almost over since 90% of its failure points have been replaced by now.

I go to a local go-kart track sometimes and have learned the countersteer reflex very well, thanks to rear-wheel brakes. Unfortunately the karts have a traction control algorithm that cuts power when a slip angle is detected, so oversteer doesn’t last very long.

That’s excellent to start them early, opens up serious career opportunities later on! Good Oppo parenting for sure.

They’re electric karts. With TC off they’d roast tires alllll day and it’d be glorious.

Sounds good. If you know of any tuner shops with good reputations in the area , you might ask around there to see if there are local groups that hold open drift events. Even though many drifters do much of their own work to keep cost down, in my experience it seems like certain people congregate at shops who know the right people with which to get in touch.
If you get bit by the drifting bug, I’d be really interested to know how your experience of sliding d ynamics differs due to the mid-engine layout.

I honestly don't want them racing professionally, but good car control skills are invaluable. They're already on track to be over 6'6" so I don't think it'll happen any way.

That’d be a different ball of wax than regular front /rear type drifting. I’ve got a rear engine car on 13" tires. A corvair with that snap-oversteer reputation. I’ve tried to hang it out on dirt, no deal. The limit is far beyond what I thought it would be. But I’m sure when it happens, I’ll know.

Corvairs on modern tires don’t really have the snap oversteer issue

At 6'2" my center of gravity is already unnecessarily high for line driving. Being even taller amplifies this considerably.

Did you replace them with factory rubber or drift stuff though? Drifting is extremely hard on a car, I wouldnt do it to a daily

They run “drift nights” at this center, but they make the karts “drifty” by putting plastic-wrapped tires on the back wheels.
No relaxing of TC, no wheelspin. Just zero rear traction, and a healthy dose of disappointment.

Not professionally, but I have a slightly loose autocross driving style and I have a few friends with private lots . The Crown Vic was the easiest thing ever to slide about. Crank up the rear tire pressure, flick it in early and let the radical alignment and locked diff do all the work. The G35 takes a little more effort with the relatively weak viscous diff and the sub-optimal alignment but it’s easy enough to initiate. Just remember to drive Gs and Zs shallow because they don’t have a ton of stock angle.

I would recommend watching keiichi tsuchiyas “drift bible”
it’s on amazon prime for free and the drift king himself runs us through multiple techniques in different platforms.

Drifting in an MR2?! Of all the cars...
I do occasionally drift my MR2.
